After our 19 week ultrasound on April 21, 2017 (Friday), we decided to throw a small gender reveal party with my family at my sister Jammie's house.
Our ultrasound took place

at 2 p.m. at the Women's Center in the West Bank. Before his anatomy scan, we asked the ultrasound technician to write the gender on a sheet of paper and put it in an envelope without us knowing.
She was more than happy to accommodate our request. When the time came to see the baby's gender she had us look away until she was finished. It was very difficult not to sneak a peak for those 20-40 seconds, but I thought it was important that it be a complete surprise for everyone. The entire scan lasted a little over an hour and, at this point, we were completely unaware of his heart defect.
After the scan, we were given a profile picture of our baby and before we left our OBGYN appointment the ultrasound tech handed us an envelope with the rest of the images and the gender!

The night before the ultrasound, I filled two large, black balloons with confetti -- one with pink paper and one with blue. We went to Party City immediately after to get the balloon filled. We handed the man behind the counter both balloon and told him which one was for a boy or girl. Then we gave him the envelope and he only blew up the balloon that matched our note.
It was a long hour car ride to my sister's house, and I was so afraid the balloon might pop and spoil the surprise before we got there. Thankfully, we managed to make it inside and away from the small kids long enough for the reveal.

The theme we went with was "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, How We Wonder What You Are."
Since it was impromptu not everyone could make it to the party (like my sister Dale, who was out of town). And because we didn't know what the gender was either it was nearly impossible to simply move the reveal to another day.
The excitement was eating us up inside at this point! So, once the table and food was set we got our cameras ready and prepared for the reveal.

My dad handed Mohamad a pocket knife and I held the balloon as he popped it.
My heart swelled after seeing blue confetti fill the air!
It's a boy!!!
Finally, we knew what our precious baby's gender was after 3 months of wondering! My mother's intuition told me that he was a boy, but Mohamad believed the baby would be a girl. In the end, it didn't make a difference.
We were just excited to be able to finally settle on a name. Not long after, we decided on naming him Zakariya!
